Undisturbed Test Environment
Fly high up north, save time and get ahead
Kiruna is, with its 19,447 square kilometers, a large municipality - as large as half of Switzerland. This area is inhabited by a little more than 23,000 people, the majority living within the city of Kiruna. Kiruna can offer something that makes Arena Arctica very
attractive – almost empty airspace. This is in sharp contrast to airports elsewhere in Europe, where scheduled and charter flights compete for airspace. There it is difficult to find room for test flights.
As of now, Kiruna Airport has an average of eight arrivals/departures daily concentrated to the early morning, around noon and in the evening. The remaining time offers great opportunities to carry out test flights over a large surrounding area that is mostly uninhabited. This latter advantage makes the area also suitable for the testing of UAV, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, the first of which was successfully carried out as early as in 2002.
This region has a very few hazy days and it is extremely rare that flights are cancelled due to poor weather conditions. These combined factors mean shorter waiting times and a greater number of test opportunities, resulting in research and test campaigns being carried out faster and more efficiently. Arena Arctica is only 10 minutes from Kiruna with every municipal service and short transport routes. The community´s wide selection of unique experiences and adventures make it easy to fill any potential free time with enjoyable and meaningful activities. The bottom line is valuable savings in time and resources, while having a good time.
